Google Search just had its best quarter ever, and AI is the reason

Google Search just hit an “all time high” in queries during Q1 2026. That’s straight from Sundar Pichai’s mouth in Alphabet’s latest earnings statement.

Pichai is clearly feeling good about where things are headed. “Our AI investments and full stack approach are lighting up every part of the business,” he said. And the numbers back him up: Search saw 19% revenue growth, driven by what he calls “AI experiences.”

What does that actually mean? Google has been quietly weaving generative AI into search results for a while now — AI Overviews, conversational modes, smarter snippets. People are apparently engaging more, not less. That’s been a worry for a lot of observers: if AI just answers your question directly, do you still click through? The data suggests people are still searching, just differently.

Pichai also noted that Q1 was “our strongest quarter ever for our consumer AI plans, driven by the Gemini App.” Gemini is Google’s answer to ChatGPT, and it’s clearly gaining traction. The company now has more than 350 million paid subscriptions across its services, with YouTube and Google One leading the charge.

I’ll be honest: I was skeptical when Google started pushing AI into everything. The early AI Overviews had some real howlers — suggesting glue on pizza, that kind of thing. But they’ve cleaned it up significantly. And the numbers don’t lie. People are using Search more, not less.

The 350 million paid subscriptions figure is also worth pausing on. That’s a lot of people paying for Google services. YouTube Premium, YouTube Music, Google One storage — these are sticky products. And they’re growing.

What’s interesting is that Google is managing to monetize AI without making the core search experience feel like a paywall. That’s a fine line to walk. Microsoft tried something similar with Bing and Copilot, but it never really took off the same way.

Of course, there’s always the question: how much of this growth is sustainable? AI hype is still running hot, and every tech company is claiming AI is driving everything. But Google has actual usage data and revenue to show for it.

The real test will come when the novelty wears off. If people are searching more because AI makes results better, that’s sticky. If they’re just curious about the new toy, that fades.

For now, Google is riding high. And they’re not shy about telling everyone.
