Elon Musk’s X is making another run at winning back advertisers. This time it’s with a rebuilt ad platform that started rolling out on Thursday, and the whole thing is powered by AI.
It’s no secret that X has had a rough few years on the ad revenue front. After Musk took over, a lot of brands pulled their spending, and the company had to scramble for other revenue streams — AI tools, subscriptions, you name it. But according to eMarketer, things are finally turning around. They estimate X pulled in $2.26 billion in ad revenue in 2025, and that’s expected to climb to $2.46 billion in 2026. That’s still half of what Twitter made in 2021, but at least the direction is right.
Now X wants to accelerate that recovery with a platform that’s been rebuilt from the ground up. According to the company, the new system features modern “retrieval and ranking systems” — the kind of infrastructure that determines which ads get shown to whom and in what order. The pitch to advertisers is straightforward: AI will help you create better campaigns, get more relevant placements, and target more precisely. You get more control, and the AI does the heavy lifting.
Monique Pintarelli, head of global advertising at xAI, made the announcement on X itself. Her quote is worth reading: “Very few companies would have the ambition and technical courage to completely rebuild their entire advertising platform in such a short timeframe. This is classic X and xAI — bold, fast, and focused on building something substantially better for advertisers.” She also promised “rapid and seamless integration of ongoing innovation” and a “regular drop of new features.”
It’s not surprising that rebuilding the ad stack became a priority after X merged with xAI last year. That merger gave the company access to xAI’s talent and technology, and it makes sense to put that to work on the ad business — arguably the most critical revenue driver for any social platform.
This isn’t happening in a vacuum either. This week’s earnings reports from Google, Meta, and others show that AI is fueling a genuine boom in digital advertising. The New York Times noted that AI systems are now automating everything from ad creation to targeting to measurement. That’s also lowered the barrier for smaller businesses, giving them access to tools that were once only available to the big spenders.
X is late to this party, but it’s showing up with a rebuilt platform and a clear focus. Whether that’s enough to win back the brands that left during the early Musk years remains to be seen. But the numbers suggest it’s at least possible.
