Skye’s AI home screen app snags funding before it’s even out

Skye is building an AI home screen app for iPhone that replaces the standard grid of icons with something more adaptive. And investors are already buying in, committing seed funding before the app even hits the App Store.

The idea is straightforward: instead of you hunting through pages of apps, Skye’s AI learns your habits and surfaces the right tool at the right time. It’s not a new concept — we’ve seen this with launcher apps on Android for years — but on iOS, where system-level customization is limited, it’s a tougher nut to crack.

What caught my attention is the timing. Apple has been slowly adding AI features through Siri and on-device processing, but a third-party app trying to reimagine the home screen feels like a bet that Apple won’t — or can’t — move fast enough. Skye’s approach bypasses the limitations of iOS by running its AI inference on-device (privacy-friendly) while keeping a lightweight UI that doesn’t need deep system hooks.

The seed round was led by a mix of consumer tech VCs and angel investors who’ve backed AI productivity tools before. The amount hasn’t been disclosed, but for a pre-launch consumer app, it’s higher than I expected. That suggests either strong early metrics from a beta or a team with a proven track record.

I’ve tested a pre-release build. It’s smooth but not revolutionary yet. The AI predictions are decent after a few days of learning, but the real test will be whether it can handle the chaos of real-world usage — multiple contexts, changing routines, and the occasional weird request. The team claims they’re building for “ambient intelligence,” which is a fancy way of saying the phone should just know what you need without you asking.

Will it work? Maybe. But the funding shows that investors are hungry for AI that actually changes how we interact with our devices, not just another chatbot or image generator. Skye has a shot if they can execute without overpromising.

The app is expected to launch in beta within the next few months. I’ll be watching to see if the hype matches the reality.
