Spotify’s New Green Checkmark Tells You Which Artists Aren’t AI Bots

Spotify is finally doing something about the flood of AI-generated music and fake profiles cluttering up the platform. They’re rolling out a “Verified by Spotify” badge with a green checkmark, and the message is pretty clear: this artist is a real person, not an algorithm in a hoodie.

The badge confirms that Spotify has manually verified a real human is behind both the music and the profile. At launch, the company explicitly says that AI personas or profiles that primarily upload AI-generated music won’t be eligible. No surprise there—the platform has been drowning in low-effort AI tracks for months, and listeners are tired of clicking on an artist only to find out it’s a ghost in the machine.

What’s interesting is that Spotify left the door open for AI eligibility in the future. They said, “the concept of artist authenticity is complex and quickly evolving.” That’s a diplomatic way of saying they’re not ruling out a world where an AI artist could earn the badge—if we ever figure out what “authentic” even means when the music is generated by a model trained on thousands of human artists.

But don’t expect a free-for-all. Spotify says verification requires “consistently active engagement” and a real human presence. So no, you can’t just upload 50 AI-generated lo-fi beats and expect a green checkmark. The bar is higher than that, and honestly, it should be.

This feels like a step in the right direction, but I’m skeptical about how well it’ll scale. Manual verification is expensive and slow, and the bad actors are already finding ways to game the system. Still, it’s better than nothing. If you see that green checkmark, you know the person behind the music actually exists. For now, that’s a win.
